Harrison School for the Arts Spring Guitar Concert will take place on Tuesday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the main Theatre. The large ensemble will be performing a movement from J.S. Bachs Suite no. 2 (originally for flute and strings), as well as Sevillaby Isaac Albniz. Aeolian, our 8 piece audition ensemble, will play Bantu by Andrew York and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartets famously entertaining adaptation of Pachelbels Canon in D, known as Pachelbels Loose Canon. The quartet, Con Brio, will play Granadina by Joaqun Nin. There will also be a number of solos. Tickets are $5.00 for students and senior citizens and $7.00 for adults. The box office will open at 6:00 p.m. and will close at 8:00 p.m. on the evenings of the performances. The house will open approximately thirty minutes prior to curtain. If you purchase tickets at the box office, only cash and checks are accepted. Credit cards are only accepted on-line and not accepted at the box office. The Derby features ten beautiful hand-crafted swan paddleboats racing to the finish line on beautiful Lake Mirror in downtown Lakeland. Each swan will have an owner/breeder who will designate and train their own jockey for the race. Admission is free. The event features live entertainment, kids activities, a hat contest, fun, food vendors, and fireworks. The event is a fundraiser for Lakeland Vounteers In Medicine (LVIM), so please leave your coolers at home and purchase food and drinks from our vendors to help raise money for LVIM- a volunteer-run medical and dental clinic that provides free quality medical care to the working uninsured of Polk County.

StandUp Polk and local law enforcement agencies are proud to join The Drug Enforcement Administration and its national partners for the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm for citizens to dispose of unwanted/unused prescription drugs.  

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Each day, approximately, 2500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.  

Our community's Spring Purge Your Pills Rx Drop Off will include 7 locations in Polk County for citizens to turn in unused, expired, or unwanted Human and Pet Medications for safe and proper disposal.  Medications should be placed in a clear plastic bag.

Runners and walkers will have a chance to experience what may be Floridas most challenging and picturesque 5K course on Saturday, May 3 by competing in the 2014 Carillon Classic 5K Run & Walk on the grounds of Bok Tower Gardens, situated high atop Iron Mountain in Lake Wales, Florida. This annual event is open to adults and students in grades 1 through 12 and includes team competition opportunities. Everyone who registers by April 9 will be guaranteed a Carillon Classic dri-fit t-shirt. First, second and third place winners in standard age categories will receive a medal. The Carillon Classic 5k will enable participants, spectators and their families to enjoy the splendor and beauty of Bok Tower Gardens, one of Floridas most unique treasures. The Mu Zeta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host its 2nd Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament to raise funds for the Mu Zeta Lambda Education Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization serving adolescent males throughout Polk County, FL.  The four person scramble will be held at Cleveland Heights Golf Course in Lakeland, FL on Saturday, May 10, 2014. Registration is $75.00 per golfer. It will include a continental breakfast and an awards luncheon following the tournament. Registration will begin at 7:00 A.M. and shot gun start at 8:00 A.M. Don't want to play golf? We invite you to join us  during the awards luncheon ($20.00 per guest). The Mu Zeta Lambda Education Foundation, Inc. provides young men with leadership training seminars, college scholarships and community outreach opportunities to better themselves and their community. On Tuesday, May 13 at 8 a.m., small business owners are invited to participate in a special event showcasing the resources available to assist entrepreneurs in starting and growing their businesses.

Small business owners and entrepreneurs are invited to attend the free event where a unique “speed counseling” activity will give attendees 10-minute sessions with experts in legal, insurance, human resources, health care, and more. The Small Business Development Center at the University of South Florida counselor will be on hand and a “Social Media” discussion will take place.

National Small Business week is proclaimed by the President of the United States to recognize the critical contributions of America’s small businesses and entrepreneurs. This year marks the 51st anniversary of the Small Business Administration’s signature event, with events held in multiple cities from coast-to-coast May 12-16.
