The Utility Committee serves as an advisory board to the Mayor & City Commission and is responsible for the review of Lakeland Electric financial and operational reports, fuel cost recovery, rate structures, contracts, programs and departmental initiatives. Utility Committee Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month.  Meetings begin at 1PM in the City Commission Chambers at City Hall located at 228 S. Massachusetts Ave.

On this special day, Bok Tower Gardens once again becomes completely dog-friendly for a good cause! The Lakeland Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (LCPAAA) in conjunction with the City of Lakeland Parks & Recreation Department is hosting the “6th Annual Honoring Heroes BBQ Dinner and Silent Auction” at the Lake Mirror Complex on Saturday, September 6, 2014. The event, which is open to the public, will begin at 6:00 pm with the auction closing at 8:00 pm.  Tickets for the event are $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the upcoming First Friday Event or by calling (863) 934-0710.

While at the event, guests will enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner and have fun bidding on their favorite items in the silent auction. On the auction table will be something for everyone’s budget with items ranging from gift cards to local restaurants to vacation getaways. There will be opportunities to meet the K9 officers and their loyal partners.

Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Prince and The Revolution and is the soundtrack album to the 1984 film Purple Rain. It was released on June 25, 1984 by Warner Bros. Records. Purple Rain is regulary ranked among the best albums in music history. Time magazine ranked it the 15th greatest album of all time in 1993, and it placed it 18th on VH1's Greatest Rock and Roll Albums of All Time countdown. Rolilng Stone magazine ranked it the second-best album of the 1980s and 76th on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Zounds magazine ranked it the 18th greatest album of all time. Finally, in 2007, the editors of Vanity Fair labeled it the best soundtrack of all time and Tempo magazine named it the greatest album of the 1980s. In 2012, Slant Magazine listed the album at #2 on its list of "Best Albums of the 1980s" behind only Michael Jackson's Thriller. That same year the album was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry list of sound recordings that "are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States. The Lakeland Sail and Power Squadron, Inc., a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, will conduct "America's Boating Course", in one day, on Sunday, September 21, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Class will be held at Old Salt Marine, 1916 US Hwy 98 N, Lakeland, FL 33805. The cost of the class is $37.00 and includes material. Seating is limited, and pre-registration is required by September 6, 2014. Graduates will receive their Florida Boater ID card, which is required for boat operators born on or after January 1, 1988, and may also qualify for a discount on boat insurance. To pre-register for this class, please call 863-667-9047. The last class this year is November 1 at Old Salt Marine, Inc.
