SCAM ALERT:


Lakeland Electric Customers please be aware that there is a scam currently taking place where a company is impersonating Lakeland Electric.  The scam involves contacting individuals and companies looking for information and asking for quotes through emails or faxed messages.  The messages utilize a pirated Lakeland Electric logo - However, this company is in no way affiliated with Lakeland Electric.  The return email to rderrick@lakelandelectrics.com is not an official email and the individual does not work for Lakeland Electric.  Local law enforcement is currently investigating the scam.  If you are contacted through an email or a fax asking you for information, do not provide it and disregard.  This is not the way we normally contact our customers.

 


 
 
LAKELAND, FL (September 16, 2013) - The Lakeland City Commission unanimously voted to decrease the fuel charge for Lakeland Electric customers 50 cents per 1,000 kWh effective for meters read on or after October 1, 2013.  The new fuel charge will be $40.85 per 1,000 kWh.  However, the environmental charge will increase slightly due to standards mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Lakeland Electric has environmental/emission projects slated to maintain compliance with ongoing governmental regulations.
 
After listening to a presentation at the Monday, September 16, 2013 Utility Committee meeting, staff recommended a decrease to the current fuel charge based on fuel forecasts for the upcoming year.

The base rate includes environmental compliance charges that are directly related to federal and state initiatives regarding clean air and water mandates. Most of the expenses are related to energy production and include air emission controls, water quality monitoring and capital spending for equipment necessary to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Act.
 
Lakeland Electric bills are broken out for customer convenience in detail to show the base charge, fuel charge and appropriate taxes and service charges.  The fuel charge on a utility bill is exactly that, the actual costs for fuel used to generate the amount of electricity used within your residence.  Most utilities subscribe to the same billing practice and break out the base rate and the fuel charge for their customers. There is no mark-up in fuel.  In fact, fuel is a straight pass-through charge to customers.

LAKELAND ELECTRIC BILLING CYCLES WILL CHANGE

 

LAKELAND, FL (June 5, 2013) -- Some Lakeland Electric customers will see a change in the date meters are read beginning with bills issued July 1, 2013. Approximately 20% of customers will experience a change in their billing cycle resulting in a new due date for payment.

 

Lakeland Electric General Manager Joel Ivy said, “This change is necessary because Lakeland Electric is modifying its meter reading schedule to accommodate the elimination of manual electric meter reads.”  He added, “This is a direct benefit of the Smart Meter program. However, we will continue reading water meters manually.”

 

Assistant Water Utilities Director Bob Conner said, “We are slowly changing out mechanical water meters with smart technology as older meters fail so at this time we are still conducting manual reads for water meters.”

 

In order to streamline operations and to make water meter routes more efficient, some customers will experience a change from their present read date. Most of the affected customer’s read/bill date will change by as little as four days.  However, a few hundred customers will see changes ranging from 10 to 14 days.

 

For those customers that may have a bill that exceeds a 30 day period and if this bill requires payment assistance, please contact the Lakeland Electric Customer Service Call Center at 863-834-9535. Ivy said, “Staff has the ability to assist customers to help make sure that this one-time change does not adversely affect accounts.”

LAKELAND, FL (November 5, 2012) -- The Lakeland City Commission voted unanimously 7-0 in favor of a Smart Meter opt-out program for Lakeland Electric.  The program will allow Lakeland Electric customers to choose between a smart meter and a digital meter that must be read manually. 

Smart Meters offer customers added benefits over analog or digital meters.  With a Smart Meter customers can receive energy alerts, view daily energy use and smart meters automatically report power outages.  Smart Meter customers can participate in energy management by monitoring usage through their very own web portal.  Lakeland Electric customers can log onto www.mysmarterpower.com to view their daily energy usage.

Those customers wanting to opt-out of the Smart Meter program can do so by calling Lakeland Electric customer service at 863/834-9535.  There will be a $16.25/month charge for those customers who choose to opt-out because of the dedicated need to have meters read manually each month.  Smart Meters automatically report consumption so manual meter reads aren’t necessary.   The $16.25 monthly charge goes into effect March 1, 2013 for those who choose the opt-out program.  There is also a $65 dollar one-time meter replacement fee to change out a Smart Meter with a digital meter as part of the opt-out program.  This fee is waived until March 1, 2013.

Lakeland Electric has already installed over 115,000 Smart Meters to date and there will be over 120,000 installed by the end of December 2012 when the system is fully deployed. Installation of the new meters started March 2, 2011 as the first step in the overall Smart Grid initiative. The Smart Grid is the evolution of the nation’s utility grid to make it more effective, efficient and responsive to the needs of utility customers and the growing demands placed on the nation’s power industry. Lakeland Electric was one of 100 utility companies to be chosen to integrate into the Smart Grid through funding by a federal grant.
