On November 1, 2013 the Lakeland Police Department will take part in the 2nd Global Police Tweet-a-thon. Last March the department participated in the first ever Global Tweet-a-thon with over 200 law enforcement agencies in 10 countries, speaking 23 languages! During the 24 hour period the participants in the tweet-a-thon sent and shared 48,482 tweets. This time we are hoping to increase the number of participating agencies and tweets.

Why participate? The Lakeland Police Department wants to help promote the use of social media in policing and get the message out to our community, and beyond, about police work and the issues officers face in the performance of their job. We want to connect with our community and give you information in the most effective, efficient manner. We currently use our Twitter, Facebook, Nixle and website to provide information directly to our community. During the Tweet-a-thon, agencies will use the hashtag #poltwt.

So, on November 1st, follow @LakelandPD as we embark on this 2nd Global Police Tweet-a-thon. This time we will also have Sergeant Gary Gross and Captain Rick Taylor tweeting, so you can follow them as well, use @GaryBGross and @CaptRTaylor.

More Than 1,000 Full-Time Jobs Coming to Florida as Part of Amazon's Plans to Build Two Fulfillment Centers in Lakeland and Hillsborough County

SEATTLE, Oct 22, 2013 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN+0.58% today confirmed plans to open two fulfillment centers in Hillsborough County and Lakeland, Fla., that will each be more than 1 million square feet. Amazon will create more than 1,000 full-time jobs in the state when these fulfillment centers open in the state of Florida.

"We look forward to offering more than 1,000 full-time jobs with comprehensive benefits at our new fulfillment centers in Hillsborough County and Lakeland, Florida," said Mike Roth, Amazon's vice president of North America operations. "We appreciate the state, city and county officials who have worked with us to bring these fulfillment centers to Florida. We're excited to join the community, bringing great jobs and investment to the area."

Amazon fulfillment center jobs pay on average 30 percent more than traditional retail jobs and that doesn't even include the stock grants that full-time employees receive. Amazon employees receive comprehensive benefits, including healthcare starting on day one, 401(k) and company stock awards. Amazon also offers full-time employees innovative programs like Career Choice, where the company will pre-pay up to 95 percent of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon. Since the program's launch last summer, employees are pursuing degrees in game design and visual communications, nursing, IT programming and radiology, to name a few.

"I would like to thank Amazon for recognizing that Florida's business-friendly environment we've helped create is the perfect place for their latest expansion," said Florida Governor Rick Scott. "On behalf of all Floridians, we welcome Amazon and the great jobs and opportunities that their expansion brings to Florida families."

At the Lakeland facility, Amazon employees will pick, pack and ship large items to customers, such as kayaks, televisions and more. At the Hillsborough location, employees will send smaller items to customers--anything from books, electronics and consumer goods, to name a few.

"Amazon's decision to invest in Florida is yet another vote of confidence in the state's business climate. The distribution facilities in Hillsborough County and Lakeland are incredibly important for those regions as well as the state," said Secretary of Commerce and President and CEO of Enterprise Florida Gray Swoope. "This announcement signifies that Florida has the infrastructure, workforce and business-friendly climate needed to support companies like Amazon. We are extremely fortunate in Florida to have announced numerous game-changing competitive job projects over the last two years, and we look forward to watching Amazon grow in our state."

The Hillsborough County project will be developed by Seefried Development Management, Inc. and Johnson Development Associates, Inc. will develop the Lakeland site. LAKELAND SWAN ROUND UP – OCTOBER 22ND

LAKELAND, FL (October 21, 2013) -- The City of Lakeland Parks Division will be on Lake Morton at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, October 22nd h for the 33rd Annual Swan Roundup.  Crews will be catching and herding the swans as the initial part of their annual veterinary check-up.

The swans will be confined in large holding pens on the south side of the lake for inoculations and wellness examinations that will start Wednesday morning, October 23rd at 7:30 a.m. with Patricia Mattson, DVM.

The Annual Swan Round-Up allows Lakeland's Parks and Recreation Department to closely monitor the health and vitality of Lakeland’s swan population. On Wednesday morning, each swan will be given a wellness examination by veterinarian Patricia Mattson.  They will also be weighed, vaccinated, and given a microchip if necessary so their health can be easily tracked.

The original swans on Lake Morton were donated by Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom in 1957.  The swans were first cared for by veterinarian (emeritus) and original "Swanvet" W.G. Gardner.  As Lakeland’s swan flock grew, it became paramount to give the regal birds an annual health check so the Swan Roundup began.  This practice started in 1980 and has continued every year since then.

Dr. Mattson has almost 20 years of experience in veterinary medicine.  She the owner of Companion Animal Hospital a full service facility that provides general medical care, preventive medical care, vaccinations, health certificates, caesarean section, diagnostic services, on-site kennel, on-site laboratory testing, flea control, dietary counseling, spay/neuter, declawing, radiology, general surgery, dentistry, emergency services, microchipping, pharmacy services and boarding.
