At the City Commission meeting held April 2, 2012 the Lakeland City Commission presented Beautification Awards to the residence at 3304 Innisbrook Dr. and the commercial property at 719 N. Massachusetts.

Employee Service Awards were presented to:

  • Jacquelyn Adkinson, Chad Hotchkiss, Christopher Leggett, Heath Seeber, James Tanner Jr. for 10 Years of service.
  • Timothy Keeney, and Melinda Morris for 20 years.
  • David Brice, David Doty, Tracy Grice, Robert Guion Jr., Terry Hamilton, Valerie Highsmith, Lloyd Holmes, Robert Jaroszeski, Michael Platt, Douglas Riley and David Smith for 25 years.
  • William LePere for 30 Years.

Proclamations were presented in recognition of :

Child Abuse Prevention Month, Community Development Week, Donate Life Month, Fair Housing Month, National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, National Volunteer Week. Sertoma Month, Volunteer Appreciation Month and Water Conservation Month.

Michael Simms and Richard Vick were appointed to the Beautification Board.

Todd Baylis was appointed to the Downtown Community Redevelopment Agency Board.

An amendment to the city code establishing fees for reviewing petition signatures was defeated.

An amendment to the city code affecting the police officers’ defined benefit retirement fund was postponed.

The section of Providence Road which is on the North side of I-4, just east of the Sports Authority, was renamed Betz Place.

The one year action plan for CDBG and HOME grant programs was approved.

A total of $27,348.80 in assessments for Lot Clearings at 93 properties throughout the city were approved.

Properties at 609 and 613 N. Vermont Avenue and 728 Peachtree Street which are owned by the City Community Redevelopment Agency were conveyed to Parker Street Ministries, Inc. for rehabilitation and sale as single family affordable housing.

The voluntary annexation of 24.33 acres located north and east of the current city limit line, south of Old Tampa Highway and west of Wilkerson Road was postponed.

Public Hearings were scheduled for the April 16th City Commission meeting for a daycare on property located at 1030 Olive Street , a Banquet Hall and an Alcoholic Beverage License on Property Located at 215 East Main Street, conditional use for the Boys & Girls club at 950 Pinewood Avenue, and at Girls Incorporated at 1220 West Highland Street and amendments to the Land Development Regulations for building bulk, fences and walls, and landscaping.

In final action a portion of Crevasse Street, east of N. Rd 98 was renamed “Lakeland Park Center Drive”.


Red Trail Racing of Lakeland will host the Urban Mountain Bike Criterium in downtown Lakeland on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m.  The registration and head table for the event will be in front of City Hall on Lemon Street.

Ray Wells, promoter of the event said, “There is no other mountain bike event like this in the country that we are aware of.  In fact, I am not aware of any other urban mountain bike race in the nation.” 

The Urban Criterium is a mountain bike race on asphalt and stairs that winds through the Iowa Street Parking garage and along Lemon Street in front of City Hall.  Spectators are admitted free and can view the outlined course from designated positions. 

The Iowa Avenue Parking Garage will be closed because it is part of the race course. The portion of Iowa Avenue between Lakeland’s City Hall and Lakeland Electric will be closed and a portion of Lemon Street will be closed to through traffic at Massachusetts Avenue.

Back by popular demand is the thrilling Street 2X Speed Trials competition that takes place between each urban mountain bike heat race.  Wells said, “The Street 2X is a great spectator event as racers compete on identical courses with various obstacles and ramps in two separate lanes.” The first racer to complete the obstacles and make it to the finish line is the winner.  Spectators are rewarded with some amazing acts of balance and lots of big airs as the cyclist launch themselves over the multiple ramps on the 2X course.

Lakeland, FL – StandUP Polk and local law enforcement agencies are proud to join The Drug Enforcement Administration and its national and community partners for the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, for citizens who want to dispose of unwanted and unused prescription drugs.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. More than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Each day, approximately, 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

Our community’s Spring Purge Your Pills Rx Drop Off will include 8 locations in Polk County for citizens to turn in unused, expired, or unwanted Human and Pet Medications for safe and proper disposal. Medications should be placed in a clear, air-tight plastic bag. 

Drop-off locations on April 28th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm are:

  • Davenport Police Department – 17 Market Street, Davenport 
  • Florida Dept. of Transportation – 801 North Broadway Ave., Bartow – Hosted by Bartow Police Dept. 
  • Haines City Police Department – 35400 Highway 27, Haines City
  • Lake Alfred Police Department – 190 North Seminole Avenue, Lake Alfred
  • Lake Wales Police Department - 133 East Tillman Avenue, Lake Wales 
  • Lakeland Police Department – 219 N. Massachusetts Avenue, Lakeland
  • Winter Haven Police Department – 125 North Lake Silver Drive NW, Winter Haven


Previous prescription medication collections held in Polk County in spring and fall 2010 and spring 2011 have resulted in nearly 1,700 pounds of recovered pharmaceuticals. All medications were safely disposed of via incineration. 

For folks unable to attend on April 28th, unwanted medications may also be taken to the county’s permanent drop site, located at the Winter Haven Police Department, 125 North Lake Silver Drive NW, in Winter Haven, weekdays between 9 AM and 5 PM. Medications may also be safely disposed of at home in the following manner: Dissolve medications in water, and mix with coffee grounds or cat litter. Then, pour into a zip lock bag and put in your trash. Do not dump any medications into the toilet or your trash, to avoid harming our lakes and ground water.

Starting Monday April 2, 2012, Lakeland Electric will be closing portions of Ingraham Avenue from McDonald Street to US 98 South and portions of McDonald Street near Ingraham Avenue from April 2 to April 27, 2012 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. 

The closure will allow Lakeland Electric employees enough room to relocate electric power poles and overhead electric power lines along Ingraham Avenue.  These closures ensure the safety for Lakeland Electric line workers and the public along the construction area.

This work is necessary to continue to provide electricity safely and reliably to Lakeland Electric customers.  A message board has been installed to advise those already using this route of the pending closure.  Traffic will be clearly routed by the appropriate signs and barricades to assist with an orderly flow of traffic.  Questions should be directed to Lakeland Electric’s Project Manager at 863/834-6311.
