CAMP BLAST SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM REGISTRATION – SECURE YOUR CHILD’S SPOT!

 

 

LAKELAND, FL (April 2, 2014) – Summer is right around the corner – get your child’s spot secured!  The City of Lakeland is offering Camp Blast, an eight-week summer recreation program located at City recreation facilities and various schools throughout Lakeland. Camp Blast offers elementary students, who have completed kindergarten through the 5th grade, endless opportunities for enrichment including weekly trips, on-site games and activities, service opportunities and several special events. 

 

Don’t miss out on Camp BLAST!  Registration for this opportunity begins April 12th, 8am at Kelly Recreation Complex (KRC) for City Residents and April 19th , 8am at KRC for Non-City Residents.  Spots will fill quickly – mark your calendar to attend!  A copy of the child’s report card is needed and registration fees are $200 per child paid by cash or check.  Camp begins Monday, June 16th  – Friday through August 8th.  Camp hours are from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Monday – Friday.

Picture Polk History - A Photography Contest

‘Picture Polk History’ features the History and Heritage sites on the Polk County Heritage Trail.  Explore Polk County’s ‘sense of place’ by capturing distinctive images of our unique, historic buildings, places and events.* Open to amateur photographers only.

 

Share a picture that tells the story of your town! Photography entries will be on display at the Polk County History Center May 22th. Images of excellent artistic and historic quality will remain on display from May 22nd through November 29th, 2014 at the Polk County History Center. Cash prizes will be awarded. Winners will be announced at the opening reception May 22nd.

All entries must be submitted in person at the Polk County History Center located at 100 East Main Street in downtown Bartow by MAY 3rd. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 9am-5pm. For more information call 863-534-4386.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. Photographs must be the original work of an amateur photographer.

2. Photos must feature a museum, a monument, a historic building, a cemetery or a local festival. For additional ideas, you can consult the History & Heritage Guide to Polk County brochure or you may call the Polk County History Center at 863-534-4386 to check the master list of historical sites.

3. Only 2 image entries per contestant will be allowed.

4. PHOTOGRAPH MUST BE 8” X 10” AND MUST BE MOUNTED ON STANDARD 11” X 14” BLACK MOUNTING BOARD. MOUNTING BOARD MUST BE NO LESS THAN 3/16 INCH THICK.

 

5. Photo manipulation is acceptable but it should enhance, not distract, from the heritage theme.

6. The Polk County History Center reserves the right to disqualify photographs for inappropriate or offensive imagery.

ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE
Portion of New Jersey Road to Close March 24th - April 11th



New Jersey Road (from Edgewood to Crystal Lake Dr) will be closed to traffic beginning March 24, 2014 through April 11, 2014 while utilities in the 
right of way are relocated and drainage work begins. The Signal at New Jersey Road and Sylvester will also be changing to an All-Red Flash mode in addition to stop signs being installed. This All-Red flash mode will stay in effect for a minimum of 90 days. 

This work is in preparation for the construction of New Jersey Trail project being funded by the Florida Department of Transportation. Updates and maps will be posted on our website http://www.lakelandgov.net/publicworks/PublicWorks/Projects/NewJerseyTrail.aspx

Lake Hollingsworth Drive Roundabout

The City of Lakeland has scheduled a Public Meeting regarding a proposed traffic roundabout and associated pedestrian and bicycle improvements at the Lake Hollingsworth Drive and Hollingsworth Road intersection.  The meeting will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Florida Southern College Thrift Building, located on Columbia Way (off of Lake Hollingsworth Drive), Lakeland, Florida 33801, adjacent to the Florida Southern College swimming pool area.

The meeting will be conducted in an open-house format beginning at 6:00 p.m.  A visual presentation will begin at approximately 6:15 p.m. and continuously loop throughout the meeting.  During the presentation, City staff and representatives from the study team will be available to discuss the project, receive input, and answer questions. Display boards and other visual aids depicting project concepts will be available throughout the meeting.

The public meeting is being conducted to present the results of the Alternatives Analysis study conducted by the City’s consultant of the traffic operations at the intersection of Lake Hollingsworth Drive and Hollingsworth Road; identify possible modifications to improve the operation of the intersection and associated pedestrian and bicycle improvements, and obtain input from elected and appointed officials, property owners/tenants, business owners/operators, and other interested parties. 

Public participation is solicited without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, handicap, or family status.
