Proper Use of 9-1-1 |
Emergency 9-1-1 is designed to assist the public in obtaining a quick, if not immediate, response to a situation posing immanent harm or danger to persons or property.
The proper use of the 9-1-1 system requires common sense. An example of improper use of the 9-1-1 system is, dialing 9-1-1 to request time correct time, a phone number, or to report a crime that occured with a significant time lapse. It is important to use the 9-1-1 system appropriately in order to serve the public efficiently and effectively.
Only situations that are in-progress, causing threat to the well-being of others, should be reported via the 9-1-1 system.
When an incident occurs of an emergency nature, remain calm and listen carefully to the 9-1-1 operator. The operator's questions are asked to gain information to relay to the officer or emergency responder. By remaining calm and listening to the operator, you will be of the greatest assistance to the person or situation at hand.
