2009 SWIM LESSON INFORMATION

SIGN-UPS BEGIN April 1st
Registration for both pools is held at the Gandy Pool until Simpson opens for the summer season on June 6th

SWIM LESSON DESCRIPTIONS
PARENT & TOT (Ages 3 & 4)
The purpose of the Parent & Tot class is to help young children become comfortable in and around the water so they are ready to learn to swim. Parents will participate in water activities as well as get information and skill techniques to help orient their children to the water and to supervise water activities in a safe manner.

LEVEL I - INTRODUCTION TO WATER SKILLS
The purpose of Level I is to help students feel comfortable in the water. Participants will work on skills including entering and exiting the water safely, opening eyes underwater, exhaling underwater through mouth and nose, floating on front and back, exploring arm and hand movements, swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions, following basic water safety rules, and use of a lifejacket.

LEVEL II - FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC SKILLS
The purpose of Level II is to give students success with fundamental skills. Participants will work on skills including entering the water by stepping or jumping from the side, exiting the water safely using a ladder or the side, submerging their entire head, performing front and back glide, rolling over from front to back and then back to front, swimming on their side, swimming on front and back using combined strokes, treading water using arm and leg motions, moving in the water while wearing a life jacket.

LEVEL III - STROKE DEVELOPMENT
The purpose of Level III is to build on the skills in Level II through additional guided practice. Participants will work on skills including jumping into deep water from the side, diving from a kneeling or standing position, submerging and retrieving an object, bobbing with the head fully submerged, using rotary breathing in horizontal position, performing a survival float, performing the front and back crawl, performing butterfly kick and body motion, performing the HELP and Huddle position, performing a reaching assist, using Check-Call-Care in an emergency, changing from horizontal to vertical position on front and back.

LEVEL IV - STROKE IMPROVEMENT
The purpose of Level IV is to build confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills. Participants will work on skills including performing a shallow dive or dive from the stride position, swimming underwater, performing a feet-first surface dive, performing open turns on front and back using any stroke, treading water using sculling arms motion and kick, performing the front and back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, and swimming on side using scissors-like kick, using safe diving rules, performing a compact jump into water from a height while wearing a life jacket, performing a throwing assist, and caring for a conscious choking person.

LEVEL V - STROKE REFINEMENT
The purpose of Level V is to provide further coordination and refinement of strokes. Participants will work on skills including treading water with two
different kicks, learning survival swimming, performing rescue breathing. They will work on performing a standing dive, a shallow dive, glide two body lengths and begin any front stroke, a tuck surface dive, a pike surface dive, a front flip turn, a backstroke flip turn, a front and back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke. The purpose of the Parent & Tot class is to help young children become comfortable in and around the water so they are ready to learn to swim. Parents will participate in water activities as well as get information and skill techniques to help orient their children to the water and to supervise water activities in a safe manner.
