Tuesday, March 31, 2015 7:30 p.m. Franz Joseph Haydn wrote many spectacular masses, especially at the end of his life. Under the baton of Beth Gibbs, the FSC Concert Choir will present one such late mass, the Missa in Angustiis, also known as the Lord Nelson Mass. In addition, other works by Haydn and his contemporaries will be presented in this evening of music celebrating the beauty and mastery of the Viennese Classical Era. Tickets: $18 adults; $9 students

Polk County Parks & Recreation presents the annual Easter Egg Hunts. Each hunt begins at 9:00 a.m. SHARP, so don't be late! For children ages 2-9, admission to this event is free and is divided by age groups. Bring a basket or bag to collect eggs. Every egg contains a prize (candy or toy). On Saturday, April 4th, 2015 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, the City of Lakeland’s Solid Waste in coordination with the Polk County Solid Waste Division is sponsoring a FREE Household Hazardous Waste and End-Of-Life Electronics Collection Event, located at the Lakeland Center, 701 W. Lime Street, in the south parking lot west of WONN Radio Station. This Mobile Collection Event is intended to make it more convenient for our community to safely dispose of their waste and discarded electronic equipment.

Household Hazardous Waste - Accepted Materials

Paints, paint thinners, florescent light bulbs, motor oil, drain cleaners, pool chemicals, insecticides, household batteries, etc.
No biohazard (medical) waste or business waste will be accepted.

End-Of-Life Electronics – Accepted Materials

Computers, monitors, keyboards, terminals, televisions, stereos, printers, fax machines, video games consoles, wireless devices, etc. No more than five items per household please.

The Lakeland Flying Tigers 2015 Home Opener kicks off Thursday, April 9 at Joker Marchant Stadium when they battle their north division rivals the Tampa Yankees. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm and the gates to Joker Marchant Stadium will open at 5:30 pm.

Taste of Lakeland
The Flying Tigers will be hosting their annual Taste of Lakeland. Area restaurants will serve up delicious food samples from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. or while supplies last. Tickets to the Taste of Lakeland are only $10 (advance of the game) and include free food samples, live music and a ticket to the Flying Tigers game.  Proceeds will benefit Culinary Arts Programs in Polk County.

The Theatre students are proud to present Bus Stop this April. Bus Stop is a drama, with romantic and some comedic elements. It is set in a diner in rural Kansas, about 25 miles west of Kansas City, Missouri during a snowstorm from which bus passengers must take shelter. The play was adapted into a film in 1965 starring Marilyn Monroe. It will be performed on Thursday, April 16, Friday, April 17 and Saturday April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre at Harrison. There will also be a Sunday matinee at 2:00 p.m. on April 19, 2015 Tickets are $11 for adults and $9 for students/seniors. They may be purchased at www.harrisonarts.com.

The 863 Local FiArt Fest brought to you by Alfa Romeo FIAT of Winter Haven and The 863 Magazine, and promoted by Central Florida Event Vendors, will be held in Central Park, Downtown Winter Haven, Florida, on April 18, 2015, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

This is a FREE community event featuring more than 50 LOCAL and talented artists from Polk County and surrounding areas, live music, food trucks, and raffle tickets. Artisans will be competing for cash prizes and selling their artwork, too. There is not a similar event like it in Polk County, Fl., that focuses on art only from Central Florida.

Because art matters and shopping small is important, we are excited that this event will not only promote our local arts, but will also show the community just how much talent we have right here in our own backyard. The community will experience and meet great artists who work with paintings, glass, ceramics, photography, mixed media, wood, metal, recycled art, sculptures, and much more.

We are proud to announce that Alfa Romeo FIAT of Winter Haven is the main sponsor of the 863 Local FiArt Fest. Alfa Romeo FIAT of Winter Haven will be providing the $500 prize for the first place award. The 863 Magazine will be providing the prize monies for 2nd and 3rd places, as well as five honorable mentions. Adjudication will be by an anonymous artist with several decades of experience in the art world.

We are currently accepting applications from artisans who live in Polk County, or any county that touches Polk, including Lake, Orange, Osceola, Okeechobee, Highlands, Hardee, Manatee, Hillsborough, Pasco, and Sumter counties. Application fee is $10; if accepted, vendor space is $75.  As many as 15 of Polk County’s premier chefs will be invited to participate in this culinary extravaganza with each chef creating their own menu and preparing tableside a five-course meal with accompanying wine (or other libations) for a table of 12.  Each Chef will create an ambience as unique as their culinary creations.  An all-star panel of judges will rate each Chef on the taste of their creations and award the title of “Top Chef of Polk County.”  Guests will rate the table and its Chef on a list of qualities that will include taste, menu selection, food presentation, wine pairings, tableside manner (“Personality!”) and a host of others that will combine to crown the “Top Chef of Polk County People’s Choice.”  Awards will also recognize the “Top Philanthropic Chef” winner as well as the “Top Table Decor.”

In 1968 a unique tradition began in Lakeland that continues today. The member civic and service clubs of Lakeland proudly announce the 47th Annual Public Safety Awards Luncheon to be held at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The largest awards program of its kind in Central Florida, the President's Roundtable, representing 12 local civic and service clubs, recognizes the top public safety officers from the Lakeland Police department, Lakeland Fire Department, polk County Sheriff's Office, Polk County Fire Rescue Services, Florida Highway Patrol (currently non-participating, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The College Education Allowance Program Award is awarded to dserving children whose parents work for one of the included agencies. The success of this program is measured by the support of the member organizations and corporate sponsors. Money raised is used to pay for awards, college awards, and complimentary meals for the award recipients and their significant others.
