Lakeland, FL — The week of April 22 - 28, 2012, National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, is a time to honor crime victims and our nation’s progress in advancing their rights. This year’s theme—Extending the Vision: Reaching Every Victim—celebrates the vision behind that progress and the ideal of serving all victims of crime.

The vision that launched the victims’ rights movement emerged more than 30 years ago. Then—as now—crime victims endured physical and emotional wounds and costly financial burdens. The Lakeland Police Department has an established Victim's Assistance Program that continually works to confront these challenges and to promote fair, compassionate, and respectful responses to victims of crime. As part of the program, a Victim's Compensation Trust Fund has been established to provide financial support for victims of crime in the areas of counseling, dental/medical bills, lost wages just to name a few.

An integral part of the Victim's Assistance Program are the volunteers from the Lakeland community who donate their time to assist victims of crime. Volunteers play many roles such as providing emotional support, helping with transportation needs and serving as a guide in obtaining compensation for the victim.  The Lakeland Police Department is continually recruiting volunteers and happy to work with any one interested in assisting those in need in our community.

For additional information about National Crime Victims’ Rights Week or the Victims Assistance Program and how to help victims in your community, please contact the Lakeland Police Department at 863.834-6914.
