In response to the closing of Polk County Schools, the Kelly Recreation Complex will open its doors for child care services on Monday, August 27th from 7:30 AM until 5:30 PM for elementary age students. The fee is $25.00 per child and students will need to bring a bagged lunch. For additional information please call 863.834-3284.

The City of Lakeland City Commission will be holding two town hall meetings to discuss the Fiscal Year 2013 budget and possible funding methods for a new Fire Station proposed in the Southwest quadrant of the City.  There will be a town hall public meeting starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21st at the Sandpiper Golf Club Clubhouse located at 6001 Sandpipers Drive, Lakeland, FL 33809.  On Wednesday, August 22nd starting at 6 p.m. there will be a town hall meeting at Cleveland Heights Golf Course in the Clubhouse located at 2900 Buckingham Avenue, Lakeland, FL 33803.  Both meetings are scheduled 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

There is a Southwest Lakeland Fire Station in the City’s long-term plan to be constructed in 2017.  However, there is a desire among members of the City Commission based on citizen input to start construction in the upcoming year due to a $2 million grant from the Florida Department of Transportation that will be available in 2013 to assist in the construction costs.

Citizen feedback is very crucial in both the decision whether to build the new Fire Station and if so, how to fund its capital and operating costs.  Proposed funding possibilities include a property tax millage increase, a reduction of City services or increased dividends from the Water and Wastewater Utilities funded from a Water and Wastewater rate increase. 

The proposed property tax increase is .5 mills.  Currently the City of Lakeland has a property tax rate of 4.1644 mills per every $1,000 of assessed residential property value.  It is proposed that the millage rate be increased to 4.6644 mills per every $1,000 of taxable residential property value in order to construct and man the proposed Southwest Lakeland Fire Station.  There is also interest from some members of the City Commission to increase water and waste water rates to fund the proposed fire station.  Another option is to reduce existing City services to fund the operation costs of the new station.  There is also the option to forgo the $2 million FDOT grant and build the new Fire Station in 2017 when it is in the capital plan.

Lakeland residents are encouraged to attend these town hall meetings because citizen input is very important in the decision making process.  The City is in the closing stages of preparing the FY13 budget document that goes into effect October 1, 2012. Traffic Operations will be closing E Orange St between Bartow Rd and Ingraham Av for approximately 5 hours starting at 8 AM on 8/22 for the installation of a new concrete signal pole. No Eastbound traffic will be allowed past Ingraham Av.

Traffic Operations will be closing E Orange St. from Bartow Rd. to Ingraham Ave. for approximately two (2) days beginning 8/27 for traffic signal work at this intersection starting at 8AM. The traffic signal will be off and a temporary stop sign will be in place for EB Orange St and no traffic will be allowed past Ingraham Av until the signal work is completed. A Detour route will be in place.

Dinner and Silent Auction to Honor Heroes

 Proceeds Raised will benefit the Lakeland Police K-9 Unit and

 the LCPAAA Scholarship Fund

LAKELAND, FL (August 14, 2012) – The Lakeland Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (LCPAAA) in conjunction with the City of Lakeland Parks & Recreation Department is hosting the “4rth Annual Honoring Heroes BBQ Dinner and Silent Auction” at the Lake Mirror Complex on Saturday, September 8, 2012. The event, which is open to the public, will begin at 6:00 pm with the auction closing at 8:00 pm.  Tickets for the event are $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the front desk of City Hall or by calling(863)409-4465.

While at the event, guests will enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner and have fun bidding on their favorite items in the silent auction. On the auction table will be something for everyone’s budget with items ranging from gift cards to local restaurants to vacation getaways. There will be opportunities to meet the K9 officers and their loyal partners. A photo booth will be available where guests can have their photo taken with a K9 and take home a free souvenir photo.

Donations Needed

Donation items are being sought for the silent auction. Those who would like to make a donation will have their name displayed at the silent auction as a donor and posted on the LCPAAA website. Once the auction has ended, donors will be notified by mail how much their item sold for so that information can be used for tax purposes. Limited table sponsorships are also available. 100% of the net proceeds will be donated to the Lakeland Police Department's K-9 unit and the LCPAAA scholarship fund.
