Lakeland City Commissioner Justin Troller Appointed to Selective Service Board

Lakeland City Commissioner Justin Troller was recently appointed as a member of the Selective Service System Local Board in the State of Florida.  Troller will serve as a Selective Service Local Board member for 20 years and as part of his commitment, he will participate in a one-year comprehensive training program.

Troller said, “It is a great honor to serve my country in this capacity.  Even though the United States does not have an active draft, the Selective Service plays an important role in administering benefits and programs.”  He added, “I recently completed my initial board member training session that allowed me to participate in activities that the board would be required to perform if a draft is activated in the future.”

Troller was nominated by Governor Rick Scott and was appointed by President Obama to serve on the Selective Service Local Board.  The Selective Service System is an independent federal agency within the Executive Branch of the Federal government of the United States. The Director of the Selective Service System reports directly to the President of the United States of America.

The agency maintains a National Headquarters, three Regional Headquarters and a Data Management Center.  Even during peacetime, the agency is aided by 11,000 volunteers serving on local boards and district appeal boards. Local board members act as the initial classifying authority and consider administrative denials for those wanting to be exempt from the registration process.

The Selective Service maintains information on those potentially subject to military service.   Most male citizens and male immigrant non-citizens between the ages of 18 and 25 are required by law to have registered within 30 days of their 18th birthdays. Registration for Selective Service is also required for various federal programs and benefits, including student loans, job training, federal employment and naturalization.
