Employment Process
Your opportunity for employment with the City begins with your application.
The accuracy and completeness of your application will be used to determine your qualifications. Applications are available & accepted (only for the announced positions) daily between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Please use the hyperlinks on the left to view current employment opportunities. We also advertise in the Sunday issue of the Ledger and the Wednesday issue of the Central Florida Quest. Applications must be filed with the Civil Service Office by the closing date indicated in the public notice. Applications remain in our active files for one (1) year from the date of receipt or the date of scheduled examination, whichever is the latter.

Some positions require that applicants produce documentation (i.e. high school/college transcripts, certifications, registrations, birth certificates) to meet minimum qualifications. Documentation is required at time of application.

In addition, the City may require all applicants to pass competitive or noncompetitive tests for any position. Applicants usually receive written notification of scheduled examinations upon receipt of completed applications. Photo I.D. required for admittance to the exam.

Applicants certified as having met all Civil Service requirements will have their names placed on the employment eligibility list. This list is in force for one (1) year unless extended at the recommendation of the Director by the Civil Service Board.

PLEASE NOTE: Civil Service determines only if you are qualified or unqualified for position(s) applied. The hiring authority will schedule interviews and make appointments to fill position vacancies.

If you are claiming Veteran’s Preference, proof of eligibility (i.e. military discharge papers, VA disability letter) is required upon receipt of application. Veteran’s preference points are added to qualifying scores only.

The City of Lakeland may reject an application for any of the following reasons, although rejection may be made for reasons other than those listed.
