From US 98 (Bartow Road) to Lake Bonny Drive West

The Florida Department of Transportation and Lakeland Community Redevelopment Agency (LCRA) are funding improvements to  East Main Street between US 98 (Bartow Road) and Lake Bonny Drive West in order to beautify this corridor and improve conditions for bicyclists, pedestrians and transit patrons.  The changes include converting East Main Street from the current four-lane undivided roadway section to a divided two-lane roadway section with bike lanes, landscaped medians and/or turn lanes at strategic locations. This project also includes the construction of brick crosswalks at the Ingraham Avenue intersection and the replacement of the existing traffic signal at the Gary Road/Tyler Avenue intersection with a” four-way stop” traffic control. 

PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

The City of Lakeland and the Lakeland Community Redevelopment Agency will conduct a public information meeting on:

First Baptist Church at the Mall (“The Pit Stop” - Faith Riders Room) - 

1010 East Memorial Boulevard in Lakeland, Florida

5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  

The City of Lakeland is hosting this meeting to inform the public about the project scope and schedule, and provide the public and adjacent property owners with an opportunity to ask questions concerning the planned improvements.  The meeting is an open-house format with no formal presentation, allowing you to view the displays at your convenience.  Materials on display will include illustrations of the proposed improvements and project schedule. City staff will be available to answer questions and address concerns.

Display boards of this project will also be made available beginning April 16, 2012  in the lobby of Lakeland City Hall located at 228 South Massachusetts Avenue.  In addition, images of the project may be viewed online at www.lakelandgov.net.

Planned Improvements

East Main Street has been identified as a collector street that could benefit from bicycle and pedestrian improvements for neighborhood residents that also provide connectivity to future facilities such as the Fort Fraser Trail.  East Main Street has also been identified as an important route between Lake Mirror and Lake Bonny that could benefit from beautification enhancements such as landscaped medians. The Lakeland Community Redevelopment Area (LCRA) has partnered with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to implement the following improvements:

  • Conversion of East Main Street from US 98 (Bartow Road) to Lake Bonny Drive West from the current four-lane roadway section to a two-lane roadway section with an intermittent turning lanes, medians and bike lanes.
  • Construction of decorative brick crosswalks at the East Main Street/Ingraham Avenue intersection.
  • Construction of landscaped medians to guide turning movements on East Main Street and to beautify the project corridor. 
  • Installation of decorative benches and trash receptacles at recently improved transit stops in corridor.
  • Removal of traffic signal at East Main Street/Gary Road/Tyler Avenue intersection and conversion of intersection to “four-way stop” operations.
