Join us once again in a celebration of nature as Tropiflora Nursery brings a botanical sale to Lakeland that is truly unique!
Dennis Cathcart is a lifelong Florida resident. He and his wife Linda are the owners of Tropiflora, a nursery specializing in bromeliads, orchids, aroids, caudiciforms, and many other exotic plant specimens.
Dennis’ interests early on revolved around herpetology, an avocation which sent him to the Caribbean and Latin America on many trips. It was on these trips that he became acquainted with exotic plants, sparking a new interest that has spanned over 40 years both as a collector and a grower.
Bromeliads and specifically, Tillandsias, are their specialties. They have over 7,000 different varieties of plants that come from around the world. Many of their plants were collected as seeds and cuttings from more than a hundred expeditions in 75 different countries. Three species of bromeliads - Aechmea cathcartii, Neoregelia cathcartii, and Vriesea cathcartii were discovered and introduced to science and cultivation because of their explorations.
Lecturing currently takes them to countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Java, the Philippines, Venezuela, Brazil as well as the United States. In 2015, Dennis was the keynote speaker at “Bromsmatta” the Australasian Bromeliad Conference in Sydney, Australia. Tropiflora also recently supplied the anchor collection of plants (over 300,000) to the ‘Gardens by the Bay’ project in Singapore.
We are proud to have Dennis and Linda Cathart featured as our 2017 Plantae Exoticum guests! Exotic plant specimens will be available to Lakelanders (any all who travel to attend--last year, people came from across the state to see the beautiful plants of Tropiflora Nursery!
Plantae Exoticum will take place on February 23rd at Hollis Garden in downtown Lakeland! (Be sure to show up EARLY, as they go FAST!)
