Lakeland History & Culture Center Lecture Series

Join us at the Lakeland Public Library on Thursday, April 18th at 5:30 PM as Thomas A. Cloud, Esquire presents "Sunshine Sports Mecca: A Lakeland Story."

For much of the 20th century, Lakeland sought to develop into an inland commercial powerhouse.   Starting with the 1920s real estate “bubble,” the city invested in significant public and private improvements, including the construction of a barge canal linking it directly to the Gulf.  Part of this ambitious program—perhaps its most successful component—was the development of sports venues and programs.  Surviving despite a crushing financial crisis, these initiatives have been as important as any in defining Lakeland.

Find out more information about "Sunshine Sports Mecca: A Lakeland Story."  No registration is required.

This event is made possible by Geico Philanthropic Foundation.

  • Tablet and phone screens with text "Library App Available"

    PCLC Libraries App Available

Good news! Our original Polk County Library Cooperative (PCLC) Libraries app is working once again and is available for use while we continue the process of replacing it with a new library app.

If you still have the app installed on your device, you should now be able to log in and resume use with accurate, up-to-date information about your checkouts and holds. If you removed the app from your device, it is currently available in the Apple store and should be available in the Google and Android stores in the next few days.

We are continuing to work with our vendor on our new, next-generation library app. When it is released, the new app will seamlessly upgrade and replace the PCLC Libraries app on any devices where it is already installed.
