JAMES E. BENNETT COLLECTION RG150 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
Lakeland singer and song writer James Bennett traces his musical routes to singing gospel music in the church choir as a child. He attributes his vocal strength and control as a singer to that childhood experience. Bennett has performed locally and regionally and released a compact disk of his music on the Omega-Delta label in 1994 entitled "Bennett Don't Break It." All but one of the songs on the disk were written and produced by Bennett. He has also produced a music video of one his songs entitled "The Grinn," (pronounced grind). The James Bennett Collection was donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library in 1989 and 1995. Included are audio cassette, video cassette, and compact disk recordings of Bennett performing his music, certificates of copyright registration for pieces of music written by Bennett, flyers promoting a 1998 Bennett concert, lyrics to one of Bennett's songs, a typescript copy of a poem he wrote, a photograph of him, newspaper clippings, and his first harmonica. |
