     RECORDS OF THE FRIENDS OF

THE LAKELAND PUBLIC LIBRARY

1962 - 2001

     RG2610

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Lakeland organization of the Friends of the Library has been in existence since May 15, 1962 when the By-Laws were adopted.  Their purpose is "to promote adequate public library facilities in Lakeland, Florida, through development of community understanding of the library's needs, facilities and services; the building up of its resources through the encouragement of bequests and donations for the acquisition of important materials which otherwise would not be available in the Public Library; and the sponsoring of projects such as book talks, lecture series and/or exhibits to enrich the cultural climate of our City."

At some time the Friends became inactive.  When David Reich, the City Librarian, came to Lakeland in 1983 he formed a new Friends group, which was chartered as a not-for-profit corporation under the laws of the State of Florida on March 5, 1984.  The Friends has raised funds through book sales and dues to help support the Library staff.
