RECORDS OF THE FRIENDS OF THE LAKELAND PUBLIC LIBRARY RG2610 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Lakeland organization of the Friends of the Library has been in existence since May 15, 1962 when the By-Laws were adopted. Their purpose is "to promote adequate public library facilities in Lakeland, Florida, through development of community understanding of the library's needs, facilities and services; the building up of its resources through the encouragement of bequests and donations for the acquisition of important materials which otherwise would not be available in the Public Library; and the sponsoring of projects such as book talks, lecture series and/or exhibits to enrich the cultural climate of our City." At some time the Friends became inactive. When David Reich, the City Librarian, came to Lakeland in 1983 he formed a new Friends group, which was chartered as a not-for-profit corporation under the laws of the State of Florida on March 5, 1984. The Friends has raised funds through book sales and dues to help support the Library staff. |
