     RECORDS OF THE

 PILOTS IN THE SUN EXHIBIT

RG2710

1940 - 1999

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Pilots in the Sun, Primary Pilot Training Schools in Lakeland and Avon Park, Florida 1940 - 1945 is the history of two Army Air Force training schools operated by Albert Lodwick to train pilots for WW II. It was written by Waneta Sage-Gagne and published by the Friends of the Library, Lakeland, Florida, Inc., in 1990 in conjunction with an exhibit funded by a grant from the Florida Endowment of Humanities.  The exhibit commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the Lakeland School.  In 1994 an historic marker was erected at the site of the Lakeland School.

Our collection includes correspondence with former cadets and instructors, the grant application and records relating to the exhibit, and records relating to the dedication of the historic marker.  See also the Albert Lodwick Papers, RG2700, and Tomlinson, W. W., RG2701 on the  Special Collections Manuscript page.  R. G. Beeler's History of the Lodwick Aviation Military Academy (Lakeland, FL:  Crown Printing, 1991) provides additional details on the Avon Park flight school.  A copy can be found in the Special Collections unit.

The collection is divided into five series:
