The postcards displayed in this exhibit represent a a very small sample of the more than 700 postcards in the Lakeland Postcard Collection, RG600.  The 32 postcards displayed in the exhibit were selected because they are broadly representative of early Lakeland and because they depict significant buildings, areas, and scenes of the city.  They are also a valuable research tool because many depict buildings that have since been torn down and areas of the city that have been considerably altered.  The exhibit has been divided into broad categories (aerial views, public buildings, street scenes, etc.) with direct links to each of the categories.

The postcards in this online exhibit were scanned at 150 dpi and saved as JPEG files using Paint Shop Pro 6.  The smaller images are 2" in width (300 dpi) and the larger images are 5" in width (750 dpi).  The entire postcard collection has been scanned to a CD-ROM.  A searchable database for the collection has also been created.

Those who want information on the history of postcards can go to "A Brief History of Postcard Types."  Virginia Commonwealth University's wonderful online collection of early Richmond postcards entitled "Rarely Seen Richmond," also includes a brief history of the use of postcards in the United States.
