THE LAKELAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - IMPERIAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA RG3300 1965 - 1999 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Lakeland Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1965 by Jay Erwin, who was its musical director and principal conductor for 17 years. It was originally called the Lakeland Civic Symphony. In 1982 Larry Cullison and Mark Thielen became co-conductors, and later Cullison was also music director and Thielen served as concert master. In 1987 the orchestra changed its name to the Imperial Symphony Orchestra to expand its base of support throughout Polk County. Newspaper articles about the current organization are found in the Vertical Files of the Special Collections Room. This is a collection of brochures, flyers, and programs from the Lakeland Symphony Orchestra / Imperial Symphony Orchestra. It includes a list of personnel, members of the Board of Directors and Standing Committees, subscribers, and advertisers. There are also 15 unidentified photographs of children and adults playing instruments. There are copies of the 1966-67 phonograph record directed by Jay W. Erwin.
