Carrie Oldham was the first, and so far only, woman of African-American descent to serve on the Lakeland City Commission and to serve as mayor of the city. She was appointed to the Commission in August 1977 to replace the late Leonard Coleman. She was elected to the Commission in November 1977 and became mayor in 1980.
