HOWARD BUSS PAPERS (RG5200), 1968-1996

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Howard J. Buss Papers were donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library by Mr. Buss in a series of donations between 1989 and 1996. The records are in generally good condition and were in no particular order when they were received.

Buss is a musician, composer, and educator who has made his home in Lakeland since 1978, and the collection reflects his professional life and interests. Included are correspondence, concert and recital programs, contracts, sound recordings, sheet music, journal articles, and newspaper clippings. The collection comprises 1 linear foot. After processing, the records were organized into three series as follows: Subject Files, Sound Recordings, and Sheet Music.

Series I, Subject Files, 1968-1996, contains a variety of materials documenting Buss's professional life. Included are a biographical profile, correspondence, contracts, concert and recital programs, newspaper clippings, a scholarly journal article written by Buss, and a publicity folder for the Tijuana Brats musical group.

Series II, Sound Recordings, includes tape and cassette recordings of music composed by Buss. Pieces include "Camel Music" (performed by Buss), "Dialogue" (and several other pieces), "Eclipse," "Traditions," "Trombone Concerto" (performed by Buss), and "Wave Train."

Series III, Sheet Music, 1974-1991, contains sheet music for many of Buss's musical compositions. Almost all of the pieces were published by Buss's Brixton Publishing Company.
