This collection contains materials that document the activities of the Tuesday Music Club of Lakeland. Materials are organized into 33 scrapbooks dating from 1921 through 2000.
The collection contains newspaper articles and photos, programs of local and state meetings, membership yearbooks, annual reports, history and photographs of the club and its members, and a constitution and by-laws. Correspondence, telegrams, cards, bulletins, certificates, scholarship recipients, and various other ephemera (ink drawing, color prints, postcards, etc.) are also included.
Some highlights from the collection include a letter from President Harry Truman (found in volume 4) and the following history (found in volume 7). Mrs. Clarence A. (Bertha) Cole invited 12 women to an organizational meeting at her home in the fall of 1920. In 1921 the Tuesday Music Club became affiliated with the State and National Federations. Several members have served on the State Board. The Club has been a motivating force in the growth and development of the musical culture of Lakeland, they sponsor Junior and Children's Clubs, and award scholarships to music students. The USO presented them with a distinctive plaque recognizing their service during WWII.
The Club met in many different facilities: private homes, the Elks Club, the American Legion Home, Florida Southern College, the Woman's Club, the Mayhall Auditorium, and Westminster Presbyterian Church before moving to their current home at 421 East Park Street in 1954. A new building was erected on property donated by Mrs. W. H. Munn in memory of her husband. Mrs. Cole, founder of the Tuesday Music Club, died April 19, 1957 (her obituary is in vol. 7).
In 1928, Mrs. Cole feeling that Lakeland needed an organization composed exclusively of music lovers who were themselves performing artists, took part in the founding of what was then called the Lakeland Young Artists Club. Today it is known as the Bertha Cole Music Club. Its records are found in RG5630.
