The Second Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers (pictured above at evening drill in Lakeland in 1898) was one of five military units encamped in Lakeland in 1898 while they awaited orders to proceed to Cuba to fight in the Spanish-American War. The records in this series document the activities of the veterans' associations in Massachusetts formed to commemorate that service. Included are regimental histories, company histories, minutes of meetings, reunion programs, lists and muster rolls of members of the veterans' organizations, correspondence, service record summaries for the members of the regiment who served in the Spanish-American War, and a scrapbook of contemporary clippings from Massachusetts newspapers.
The service record summaries housed in two small loose-leaf binders contain a wealth of information about the members of the regiment. For each member, the following information is included: the date and place of enlistment and discharge, reason for discharge, company assignment in the regiment, and, if appropriate, the date, place, and cause of death.
The records in this series are arranged alphabetically by name, subject, or type of record and chronologically within folders.
