The records in this series contain general background information about Lakeland's role in hosting troops bound for Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Included are journal articles describing Lakeland's role in hosting Cuba-bound troops, dedication programs for monuments and memorials honoring those who served in the Spanish-American War, reunion and encampment programs, speeches, a list of units stationed in Lakeland, reminiscences of soldiers stationed in the city, correspondence, and newspaper clippings.
Among the most interesting items in this series is a reminiscence by Lutrelle Amrine, who was stationed in Lakeland in 1898 with the First Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. Although recorded fifty years after the fact, Amrine provided a fascinating description of daily camp life, medical treatment in the camp hospital, and recreation and training activities. Pictured above is the field hospital at Lakeland in 1898.
