LEONARD C. CARTER FAMILY PAPERS (RG1080), 1903-1990

SERIES I: FAMILY PAPERS, 1903-1990

Leonard C. Carter

The records in this series document to a small degree the personal lives of several members of the Carter family and individuals connected to it by marriage. Although the bulk of the materials relate to Leonard C. Carter, Jr., (pictured above) there are also records relating to his grandfather, Henry B. Carter, his brother, Henry Carter, his father, Leonard C. Carter, Sr., his mother, Rose Templeton Carter Haldeman, and her second husband, George Haldeman. In addition, there are materials relating to the Carter family home, built by Henry B. Carter on Lake Morton in 1904 and later moved eight miles to the south. Among its many subsequent owners were country music stars, George Jones and Tammy Wynette.

Included are brochures, correspondence, college transcripts and schedules, programs, for commencements, reunions, and other events, certificates, newspaper clippings, and the writings of Leonard C. Carter, Jr. Carter was an amateur historian and wrote a number of articles on local history, some of which are contained in this series. He was also fascinated by the sinking of the Titanic and wrote a 250 page manuscript about the disaster. He was unsuccessful in getting the manuscript published and it is housed in this series.

The records in this series are arranged alphabetically by name, subject, or type of record and chronologically within folders.
