LEONARD C. CARTER FAMILY PAPERS (RG1080), 1903-1990

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Carter family ancestral home

The Leonard C. Carter Family Papers were donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library in March of 1991 by Leonard C. Carter's wife and son, Ann and Mark Carter. The records were in generally good condition, but in no particular order, when they were received.

The records in this collection document to a small extent the business activities and personal lives of the Carter family of Lakeland through a number of generations. Although the bulk of the materials relate to the life of Leonard C. Carter, Jr., there are also materials relating to his grandfather, Henry B. Carter, his mother, Rose Templeton Carter Haldeman, and her second husband, noted aviator, George Haldeman. The records are by no means complete and there are significant gaps, but they do provide a fascinating glimpse into the professional and personal lives of one of Lakeland's most distinguished families.

After processing, the records were organized into three series as follows:

Series I, Family Papers;
Series II, Business Files;
Series II Photographs.

Series I, Family Papers, 1903-1990, contains materials relating to the personal rather than the professional/business lives of the Carter Family. The bulk of the records in this series concerns Leonard C. Carter, Jr. and includes correspondence, college grade transcripts and schedules, programs for commencements, reunions, and other events, certificates brochures, newspaper clippings, and the writings of Leonard C. Carter, Jr.

Series II, Business Files, 1905-1990, documents to a small degree Carter family business interests and includes articles of incorporation for businesses started by Henry B. Carter, correspondence, stock certificates, membership certificates, and plat maps.

Series III, Photographs, @1920-1980, contains photographs of various members of the Carter family and a photo album documenting a cross country driving trip made by George Haldeman in 1938. Many of the photographs are unidentified.

The collection comprises 1.5 linear feet.
