SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
|
The Wilson M. "Hap" Harper Photo Collection was donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library by Harper's widow, Josephine Harper. The majority of the photographs were donated in 1988, with a second donation arriving in 1997.
The photographs in this collection represent a small percentage of those taken by Harper in his long career as free lance photographer and as a photographer for The Ledger, but they especially serve to capture his interest in and love of nature. It appears that most of the photographs in this collection were taken during his 10+ year career with The Ledger, though some predate that era. Although most of the photographs in the collection depict people, places, buildings and events in Lakeland, there also some photographs of the surrounding areas of Polk County.
The collection consists of approximately 100 black and white prints and more than 200 negatives occupying .5 linear feet. All are in good to excellent condition. Additional prints will be made from the negatives as time and resources permit.
The photographs were organized into one series, Polk County Photographs, 1957-1971.
The photo above is of Lake Morton, one of Harper's favorite subjects.
