Donovan Dean was one of the foremost architects in Lakeland and the state of Florida in the 1940's and 1950's. His firm, Donovan Dean and Associates had offices in Lakeland, Orlando, Cocoa and, for a brief time, Winter Haven. Dean designed buildings are in cities from Jacksonville to Miami and in many locations in between.
Dean was a native of Wisconsin who came to Florida in 1938, first settling in Orlando before moving to Lakeland in 1942. He remained a resident of Lakeland until his death in 1967 at the age of 61.
During his lengthy career he designed more than 1000 buildings, including some 200 in Lakeland. Among the buildings he designed in Lakeland were the Lake Mirror Civic Center Auditorium, the Florida Citrus Mutual Building and the corporate headquarters of Publix. He also designed more than 60 Publix shopping centers and 100 churches throughout the state.
Donovan Dean died at his home in Lakeland on December 29, 1967
