Scope and Content Note
Copies of selected records of the Florida Citrus Commission are sent regularly to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library by the organization. The Lakeland Public Library is not the official repository for the records of the Florida Citrus Commission. As a state agency, its official records should reside in the Florida State Archives. The records in this collections are of sufficient breadth and depth, however, to provide an overview of the commission's organization and activities.
The Florida Citrus Commission/Department of Citrus was created by an act of the Florida Legislature in 1935. It is an executive agency of Florida state government whose purpose is "to protect and enhance the quality and reputation of Florida citrus fruit and processed citrus products in both domestic and foreign markets."
The Florida Citrus Commission serves as a board of directors for the Florida Department of Citrus. Its members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate to three year terms. The commission supervises the activities of the Department of Citrus and promulgates regulations governing the packaging and labeling of Florida citrus products and establishes quality standards for all citrus grown, packaged, or processed in Florida.. The Department of Citrus implements the policies established by the Commission through a wide variety of programs and promotional activities on behalf of the Florida citrus industry.
The records in this collections document to a degree the activities described above. The records comprise 2.5 linear feet and are organized into four series as follows:
