Scope and Content Note
The J. Larry Durrence Papers document to some extent the career of J. Larry Durrence as a member of the Lakeland City Commission from 1981 to 1989. They are not the official records of his tenure but rather his personal copies of the official records. There are some materials that predate and postdate his service on the City Commission. The records have been organized into two series as follows: Series I, Subject Files, 1973-1989 and Series II, Correspondence, 1979-93.
Series I, Subject Files, are in effect the administrative files of Durrence's office and include such topics, as annexation, arts programs, economic development, the Florida League of Cities, lakes, parks, the municipal airport, and public transportation. The types of documents include correspondence, memos, reports, and newspaper clippings. The records in this series are arranged alphabetically by subject and chronologically within folders
Series II, Correspondence, consists incoming and copies of outgoing letters and memos between Durrence and his constituents, city staff, fellow commissioners, officials from other cities, developers and business people seeking to do locate in the city and/or to do business with it. Some of the documents in this series are duplicated in the Subject Series. the correspondence is arranged chronologically by date.
The collection is housed in seven 5" archival boxes.
