ALBERT I. LODWICK PAPERS, RG2700, 1911-1959

Series VI, Lodwick Aircraft Industries, 1946-1959

Converting a military aircraft to civilian use

After the Lodwick School of Aeronautics closed in 1945, Lodwick established Lodwick Aircraft Industries, Inc., which operated from the same site as the former school. Lodwick Aircraft Industries was incorporated in February 1946 with the stated intention of converting military aircraft to commercial use,(pictured above) purchasing and selling aircraft, and selling aircraft parts and equipment. Almost immediately the company entered into a contract with the War Assets Administration to refurbish and sell war surplus aviation parts and equipment

Initially, Lodwick Aircraft Industries fared well. It obtained a number of contracts for converting military aircraft to commercial use and it was successful in selling surplus parts and equipment. By 1950, however, the number of military aircraft available for conversion had dwindled and most of the surplus parts remaining in the company's inventory were obsolete and had no market other than as scrap metal. The company steadily lost money through the early 1950's and ceased operations in late 1954. It remained a corporation, at least on paper, through 1959, but it had no employees and most of its equipment and inventory had been sold at auction in 1954.

The records in this series document the rise and fall of Lodwick Aircraft Industries and include audit reports, minutes of Board of Directors and stockholders meetings, the company's certificate of incorporation, correspondence, deeds, leases. ledgers, operating licenses, payroll records, promissory notes and tax returns.

The records are arranged alphabetically by subject or type of record and chronologically within folders.
