CHURCHES OF LAKELAND, RG1700, 1884-2003

Scope and Content Note

This collection includes histories, membership directories, cookbooks, miscellaneous records and ephemera from many of Lakeland's churches. The materials are arranged alphabetically by church denomination and alphabetically thereunder by the name of the church.

African-American Church Records of Polk County are located in the Subject Files. These records consist of 69 pages of photocopies from the Works Progress Administration Survey, Church Inventory Form for African-American Churches in Polk County in the late 1930's. The type of information on each form includes the name of the church, the street address, the language in which services are offered, the date the church was organized, the date of the first service, the date of incorporation, the name and background of the pastor, and a list of any published and/or unpublished histories of the church. Churches from the following communities are included in the survey: Bartow, Fort Meade, Frostproof, Homeland, Lake Wales, Lakeland, and Mulberry.

A related record group is the Highland Park Church of the Nazarene (RG5015) 1990-1991. The Church Choir of the Highland Park Church of the Nazarene recorded "Golden Dreams" which was part of the official flight kit of the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1990.

Series I, Subject Files, includes church histories, directories, bulletins, and other publications.

Series II, Cookbooks, consists of cookbooks published by churches in Lakeland.
