The Terrace Hotel
The records of Historic Lakeland, Inc. were donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library over a period of years in the 1990's by its presidents and other officers, presumably as their terms of office expired. Since there appears to have been no formal directive on the part of the organization's governing board to transfer the records to Special Collections, and since record keeping practices varied somewhat from year to year, the records are not complete. The financial records in particular have significant gaps.
The records in this collection, however, provide a comprehensive overview of the goals, objectives, and activities of Historic Lakeland since its inception in 1979. A review of the records reveals the seminal role the organization has played in preserving the architectural heritage of Lakeland over the past 20+ years.
The records comprise 5 linear feet. After processing, they were organized into six series as follows:
Series I, Subject Files;
Series II, Historic Districts/Buildings;
Series III, Financial Records;
Series IV, Newsletters;
Series V, Photographs;
series VI, Correspondence,
Series I, Subject Files, 1979-2003, contains the general administrative records of Historic Lakeland and includes agenda and minutes of board and annual membership meetings, articles of incorporation, by-laws, lists of board members, officers, and members, event programs, brochures, copies of city ordinances, and newspaper clippings.
Series II, Historic Districts and Buildings, 1979-2001, contains records relating to historic districts and buildings in Lakeland and includes historic site survey forms, correspondence, reports, site plans, maps, brochures, and newspaper clippings.
Series III, Financial Records, 1980-2001, documents to some extent the financial activities of Historic Lakeland. Included are bank statements, budgets, check registers, ledger sheets, tax returns, and treasurers' reports.
Series IV, Newsletters, 1979-2001, contains a comprehensive, though not complete, run of Historic Lakeland's newsletters since the organization's inception in 1979.
Series V, Photographs, @1920's-1990's, contains photographs depicting historic buildings in Lakeland and such Historic Lakeland sponsored activities as historic preservation week and preservation awards.
Series VI, Correspondence, 1979-2001, contains incoming and copies of outgoing letters arranged in chronological order.
