FREDERICK WILLIAM POPE COLLECTION, RG2300, 1909-1946

Scope and Content Note

Frederick William Pope was born in Baltimore, Maryland, September 24, 1866. In 1909 he came to Lakeland, bought a tract of land south of Lake Hollingsworth, and planted citrus groves. He developed the Pope summer orange, which produced fruit throughout the hot summer months, and the Pope heater, which burned charcoal to keep the trees from freezing in the winter. Mr. Pope was one of the organizers and a lifelong director of the Florida National Bank of Lakeland. His papers are mainly business and property records and a few photographs.
