MADISON L. MUMBAUER PAPERS, RG1075, 1930-1961

Scope and Content Note

Madison L. Mumbauer

The Madison L. Mumbauer Papers were donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library by Teresa S. Barker of Lakeland. The records were in fair to good condition and in no particular order when received.

Mumbauer was born in Tampa and grew up in Lakeland. He attended public schools in the city, graduating from Lakeland High School in 1933. He attended the University of Florida in Gainesville from 1934 to 1938

After graduation from college, Mumbauer entered the army in 1938 and served until late 1940, when he was transferred to the inactive reserves. He was recalled to active duty in the Army Air Corps in September 1942 and served in the Pacific theater in World War II. He was once again transferred to the reserves in 1946. He was recalled to active duty in the Air Force again in March 1951 and served primarily as an air police officer and Provost Marshall at military bases in the United States and Europe until his retirement in 1970. In his civilian life, Mumbauer served as a patrol officer and detective in the Lakeland Police Department. He died in 1975.

The papers in this collection document to a small degree Mumbauer's military career through 1961 and, to an even lesser extent, his personal life prior to 1951. After processing, the papers were organized into three series as follows:

Series I, Military Service;
Series II, Photographs;
series III, Subject Files.

Series I, Military Service, 1938-1961, consists or records documenting Mumbauer's long military career and includes air police policies and procedures, air police incident reports, certificates, commendation letters, correspondence, equipment inventories, effectiveness reports, orders, pay and housing allowance vouchers, Provost Marshall's job descriptions and procedures manuals, service statements, and testing and training records.

Series II, Photographs, @1933-1944, contains photographs of Mumbauer and military units and events of which he was a part, as well as photographs of the Lakeland High School football team on which Mumbauer played.

Series III, Subject Files, 1930-1956, consists of materials relating to Mumbauer's civilian life and includes correspondence, certificates, police department incident reports from Mumbauer's tenure as a member of the Lakeland Police Department, his high school diploma, grade reports from the University of Florida, and miscellaneous financial records.
