LAKELAND POLICE DEPARTMENT COLLECTION, P2000, 1895-1994

Scope and Content Note

Lakeland City Marshall John Logan @1906

The Lakeland Police Department Collection was donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library in May 1996 by Detective Gary Gross of the Lakeland Police Department. Detective Gross, department secretary Wanda Piver, and other officers and staff of the department had collected records and photographs for a pictorial history of the department which they were preparing for publication. The Lakeland Police Department, 1885-1994: A Tradition of Excellence was published by the department in 1994. A copy of the publication is in this collection.

The materials comprised 1.75 linear feet. They were in good to excellent condition and in no particular order when received. After processing, they were organized into two series: Subject Files and Photographs.

Series I, Subject Files, 1943-1994, consists of documents relating to the Lakeland Police Department and includes automobile accident reports from the late 1950's, a combination jail log and dog license log, a police officer's wallet badge and identification, annotated typed drafts of the departmental history, newspaper clippings, correspondence, lists, and reports.

Series II, Photographs, 1895-1994, contains photographs documenting the history of the Lakeland Police Department. They were collected to use in the pictorial history of the department. Many do in fact appear in that history cited above.
