Series II, War Bonds, 1943
This collection consists of 5 Series F War Bonds dated May 5, 1943. Four of the bonds have a face value of $25 and one has a face value of $100. The bonds were purchased by the 1943 senior classes of Lakeland High School and Washington Park High School and the proceeds were to be used for school projects. The bonds were found in a closet in the old Lakeland High School (now the Lawton Chiles Middle Academy) in the summer of 1991 by then school superintendent Glenn Reynolds.
Also included with the bonds were the following: a letter to the principal signed by the officers and members of the class of 1943 of Washington Park High School indicating that the class had voted to leave the bonds to the school for the purchase of concrete benches to be "placed under the oak tree on the campus"; a receipt for the bonds purchased by the senior class of Washington Park High School; and a letter from the treasurer of the 1943 senior class at Lakeland High School indicating that the class was leaving war bonds to the school for it to purchase a water cooler for the library.
The war bonds and supporting documentation were donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library by the Polk County School Department in 1991 and added to the Lakeland High School Collection.
