Harry Mayhall

Harry Sanford Mayhall (1882-1965) and his wife Dorothy (1895-1992) came to Florida in 1927 so he could accept the position of Music and Drama Director of Lakeland High School in 1928. Mayhall staged many plays for which Dorothy designed the sets. His Sunday concerts at City Auditorium became a city tradition. In 1943 the City Auditorium was named the Mayhall Auditorium. Harry Mayhall taught at Lakeland High School until 1952. Two of his most famous compositions, "Faith in America" and "Florida", are part of this manuscript collection.

Materials in this collection were donated to the Lakeland Public Library by the estate of Hazel Bowman, student of Harry Mayhall and longtime friend of Dorothy Mayhall and executrix of her estate. They are organized into five series as follows: Series I, Harry Mayhall, 1910-1997; Series II, Musical Scores, 1941-1947; Series III, Dorothy Mayhall, 1960-2003; Series IV, Photographs, @1920's-1950's; and Series V,  Memorabilia.
