FPLA President David Reich at the podium, 1988

The Executive Board of the Florida Public Library Association voted in 1988 to make the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library the repository for the organization's records. Records of the Florida Public Library Association were regularly deposited in the Special Collections unit during the twelve year life of the organization. As a result, the records in this collection constitute a comprehensive documentary history of the Florida Public Library Association from cradle to grave. The records are in excellent condition and afford a detailed look at the birth, active life and eventual demise of an organization that played a significant role in changing the way in which public libraries in Florida were funded.

The records comprise 6.25 linear feet. After processing, the records were organized into six series as follows:

Series I, Subject Files;
Series II, Committees;
Series III, Conferences/Workshops;
Series IV, Correspondence;
Series V, Financial Records'
Series VI, Photographs.

Series I, Subject Files, 1987-1999, contains the general administrative files of the Florida Public Library Association and includes articles of incorporation, articles of dissolution, by-laws, mission statements, goals and objectives, ballots, election tallies, correspondence, memos, reports, membership lists, and copies of legislation.

Series II, Committees, 1987-1998, contains records documenting the activities of the organization's ad hoc and standing committees, including the Executive Board. Included are agenda, minutes of meetings, correspondence, reports, conference programs, brochures and copies of award citations.

Series III, Conferences/Workshops, 1987-1998, documents the annual meetings and workshops sponsored by the Florida Public Library Association and includes registration forms, conference programs, lists of conference/workshop attendees, correspondence, reports, brochures, agenda, and evaluation forms.
