Scope and Content Note
The records of the Garden Club of Lakeland were donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library in increments in 1995 and 1999 by Peggy Brown and Marilyn Kenley respectively. Both were officers of the organization. The records were in no particular order when received and the condition of the records varies. Some of the scrapbooks and early minutes of meetings are in fair condition, while the yearbooks, photographs, and more recent minutes are in good to excellent condition.
The records in this collection represent but a small fraction of the records generated by the Garden Club since its creation in 1929. The officers of the garden club changed annually and, as records were transferred from one set of officers to the next, some were no doubt misplaced, lost, or inadvertently destroyed. The records that remain, particularly the scrapbooks and minutes of meetings, provide a broad overview of the goals and activities of the Garden Club of Lakeland since its creation.
The records comprise 10.5 linear feet. After processing, they were organized into four series as follows:
Series I, Subject Files;
Series II, Home and Neighborhood Development Sponsors;
Series III, Yearbooks;
Series IV, Scrapbooks.
Series I, Subject Files, 1929-2007, contains records documenting the administrative history of the Garden Club of Lakeland and includes award applications, certificates of award, photographs, minutes of meetings of the general Garden Club and the Shore Acres Circle, and memorabilia.
Series II, Home and Neighborhood Development Sponsors, 1969-1979, contains scrapbooks and a set of guidelines for project applications relating to the Home and Neighborhood Development Sponsors Program (HANDS). The HANDS program was co-sponsored by the Garden Club of Lakeland and Sears Community Development Club.
Series III, Yearbooks, 1932-2007, contains the annual publication of the Garden Club of Lakeland listing its officers for the year.
Series IV, Scrapbooks, 1939-1999, consists of scrapbooks compiled by Garden Club members and documenting its many programs and events over the years in Lakeland.
