Scope and Content Note

The Polk County Library Association was organized to encourage communication and cooperation among personnel in Polk County libraries. In 1954 the League of Women Voters of Winter Haven studied the possibility of a countywide library system. Numerous studies were done by local committees and Florida State consultants until 1997 when the countywide system was put into operation.

These records are organized into three series.

Series I, Countywide Library Efforts, includes records documenting early efforts to get a countywide library system.

Series II, Polk County Library System, documents the continuing efforts by citizens and some municipal librarians to get the countywide system.

Series III, Administrative Files, documents to a small extent the activities of the Polk County Library Association, which is a voluntary organization of personnel in various Polk County libraries.
