Scope and Content Note

The records of the Lake Region Unitarian Universalist Fellowship were donated to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library by the Fellowship in 1995. The records were in generally good condition and in no particular order when received.

The Lake Region Unitarian Fellowship was organized in Lakeland in 1955 and held its first meeting at the Danforth Chapel of Florida Southern College in November. In early 1956, the group became affiliated with the national Unitarian Universalist Association. It continued to meet and hold services at the Danforth Chapel until 1960, when it purchased a former private elementary school in south Lakeland. It built a new chapel on that site in 1988 and remains a small but vibrant part of Lakeland's religious community.

The records described herein document to some extent the growth and development of the Lake Region Fellowship from a small struggling congregation meeting in a borrowed chapel to a dynamic, socially conscious group with its own modern facility in south Lakeland.

After processing, the records were organized into six series as follows:

Series I, Subject Files;
Series II, Board of Trustees;
Series III, Newsletters;
Series IV, Order of Service;
Series V, Photo Albums;
Series VI, Sermons.

Series I, Subject Files, 1955-2007, contains the administrative files of the Fellowship and includes minutes of annual meetings, minutes of committee meetings, attendance books, membership lists, budgets, by-laws, newspaper clippings, program schedules, correspondence, and reports.

Series II, Board of Trustees, 1956-2006, contains the agenda and minutes of the meetings of the Fellowship Board of Trustees. Attached to the agenda are committee reports and monthly financial reports.

Series III, Newsletters, 1955-1999,, contains the Fellowship's newsletter which, beginning in 1972, was titled the Beacon.

Series IV, Order of Service, 1959-2006, consists of the bulletins for the church's weekly services. They include the order in which the service is to proceed, as well as announcements of upcoming events and programs.

Series V, Photo Albums, 1964-1992, consists of albums of photographs documenting the services, programs, and activities of the Fellowship.

Series VI, Sermons, 1996-2008, consists of the transcripts of sermons given by Rev. Robert Tucker.
