The Lakeland Police Department regained their national accreditation on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Summer Conference in Columbus, Ohio.
To receive accreditation, the Lakeland Police Department had to comply with 480 internationally accepted standards for the operation of police organizations. In April, a team of assessors from CALEA examined all aspects of the Department’s policy and procedures, operations, management, and support services to verify they met the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards. The process holds the department accountable and sets the bar for professionalism.
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA®) was created in 1979 as a credentialing authority through the joint efforts of the four major law enforcement executive associations; the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE); National Sheriffs' Association (NSA); and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).
Chief Womack said, “I am pleased that the Lakeland Police Department has regained their accredited status and thank all of the men and women of this department for their dedication and commitment to excellence.” She went on to say, “This department is moving forward and I think this shows our community that this department stands ready to serve them.”
The purpose of CALEA’s Accreditation Programs, as well as the Commission on Florida Accreditation (CFA), is to improve the delivery of public safety services. The accreditation programs provide public safety agencies an opportunity to voluntarily demonstrate that they meet an established set of professional standards.
The Lakeland Police Department went through their onsite assessment from CALEA in April 2013. In July 2013, the Commission on Florida Accreditation (CFA) assessors completed their onsite review of the Lakeland Police Department. The department anticipates the final recommendation for state accreditation by the end of September.
