On April 27, at 6:35 p.m., the Lakeland Police Department responded to 842 North Brunnell Parkway in reference to a shooting. The victim, Mark Rhodes, 16, was walking southbound on the sidewalk in the 800 block of Brunnell Parkway when a vehicle drove by heading northbound and fired several shots at the victim. Rhodes could not identify anyone in the vehicle which is described as a small silver sedan.  A nearby witness observed a subject hanging out the rear passenger window with a gun pointing in his direction. Rhodes realized he had been shot once in the chest at which time he ran to a nearby family members house who transported him to the hospital. Rhodes condition is unknown at this time. It is unknown if this was a gang related shooting at this time. Anyone with additional information can call 863.834.6900.


On April 26th, at 3:00pm, Dayquon Raheem Longs, 15 years old, was a passenger in a vehicle that was traveling southbound on Brunnell Parkway near George Jenkins Boulevard. There were three other subjects in the vehicle. A vehicle, unknown make and model, passed them firing rounds at the vehicle striking Longs in the left arm. The other subjects drove him to the Lakeland Regional Medical Center and hospital personnel called the police. His condition is unknown at this time. Patrol officers located the crime scene at 3:58 p.m. and Violent Crime Detectives responded to investigate. A passenger in this vehicle, Bayshawn Kelly, 15 years old is the victim in the next shooting described below.

The second drive-by shooting occurred at 2nd Street and Jewel Avenue this same date at 6:50pm. The victim, Bayshawn Kelly was standing outside at this location when a vehicle drove by and fired several rounds hitting him in the back and arm. He was airlifted to Tampa in critical condition. There is no vehicle or suspect description.

Both of these cases are currently under investigation and its unknown at this time if this was gang related or not. There is no additional information at this time. Anyone with information on either shooting can call 863-834-6900 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-8477.


 

On April 24th, The Lakeland Police Department responded to 1421 Newport Ave to take a report of a mutilated cat. The reportee stated that on March 5, 2014 at 4:11 p.m., he found his cat mutilated in the front yard. The cat had been torn in half behind its front legs and the lower half was missing. He also reported that he had 2 other cats missing and he last saw them that same day at 7:00 a.m. The next day he went for a walk looking for his cats and found the lower half remains on Crystal Lake Drive.

Further investigation revealed a neighbor at 2420 Newport Ave had located the upper half of a cat in a yard at 1408 Easton Drive. She informed the owner of the cat and he stated he last saw the cat on April 23 at 7:00am. The remains were taken to the Cleveland Heights Animal Hospital and held for police. Doctor Houghton advised the trauma appears to have been mostly likely done with a knife or sharp object.

Today, a grounds keeper located a large white cat in the front yard at 2 Brook Lane that was on its side with a large hole. It appears if it was a recent injury and unknown what caused the injury. It is unknown who the owner of the cat is. Polk County Animal Control is assisting in the investigation and a necropsy will be performed to determine cause of death.

Today during the follow-up investigation, five additional officers canvassed the surrounding area and routine patrol has increased in this area. Detectives are now following up on the animal cruelty cases and each count is a felony of the third degree.

The Lakeland Police Department needs to identify this suspect of an aggravated battery that occurred on April 18, 2014, at approx.  11:00pm at the Circle K, 111 Robson Street, Lakeland, Fla.

The suspect and victim exchanged words at the gas pump. The suspect struck the victim causing the victim to be knocked to the concrete sustaining a head injury.
