Media Relations Unit

The Lakeland Police Department Media Relations Unit is staffed by three employees; the Public Information Officer, Social Media Specialist and Public Records Coordinator. Its purpose is the prompt and efficient exchange of information for the benefit of our citizens. We will continuously strive to enhance the partnerships between our citizens and the officers of our department. The Public Information function is structured to support the Lakeland Police Department and to promote the department in a positive manner.

The Lakeland Police Department strives to foster a positive working relationship with all media outlets, including but not limited to TV news, print and online media organizations. The Lakeland Police Department is proud of the relationships we have made with the local, state and national news media; and with the community we serve. We will continue to work hard to maintain those relationships and to keep you informed.

The responsibilities of the PIO include responding to media requests from media outlets, issuing media releases, crime alerts, and community bulletins. In addition, they monitor news stories to ensure accuracy in reporting events that occur in Lakeland. Routine media inquiries and records requests are handled as expeditiously as possible during normal business hours. All media inquiries can be directed to 863-583-2357.

The Public Information Officer and the Public Safety Communication Specialist facilitate the transfer of information through interviews, press conferences, media releases and social media outlets. One way we can obtain the goal of improving public safety and the services we provide is through our continued outreach and communications between the department, our citizens and the media.

The department has personnel on call 24 hours/day, 7 days/week to assist media personnel. During regular business hours media can request police reports and other information to facilitate in the preparation of their articles and news cast. After hours and on weekends, a PIO is always on-call for emergencies and for significant breaking news events.

After hours, the on-call PIO will generally not have information regarding non-fatal car crashes, routine arrests, crimes not resulting in death or critical injury, or the status of cases that are not considered breaking news. Written records, including arrest affidavits, arrest reports, and event reports are generally not made available to personnel after hours or on weekends.

The Lakeland Police Department also provides information about breaking news events, safety tips and other departmental activity through our social media sites. We strive to keep our community informed and to stay in touch through these outlets.
