Lakeland Police Department’s next Chief’s Chat will be held on Monday, December 7th, 2015 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Community Room of the Lakeland Police Department, located at 219 N Massachusetts Avenue. This month, Chief Giddens will speak on the crime stats and how we compare to our stats from last year this same time.

On November 20th at 7:15pm, the Lakeland Police Department responded to Sikes and Ariana Street in reference to a bicyclist hit by a car. The driver, Henry L. Goodman, 67, of Mulberry was northbound on Sikes Blvd when a bicyclist crossed the road into his patch. The bicyclist, identified as, Byron P. Haas, 39 yrs old, was hit and landed in the roadway on Sikes just north of Ariana Street. Haas was pronounced deceased at the scene by Polk EMS.

Goodman and witnesses stated the light was green and that Haas rode his bicycle into traffic when he did not have the right away, and also outside of the pedestrian pathway. No charges have been filed and Traffic Homicide Investigator will follow up.

The Lakeland Police Department SWAT Team participated in the 33rd annual International SWAT Round-up at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office training facility from November 8-13, 2015. There were a total of 61 teams participating in this event from around the world such as Stockholm, Kuwait, Hungary and Sweden.

The SWAT Roundup consists of several competitive events over a five day period with a different event taking place each day. The events are geared for simulation of real life scenarios and are intended to challenge the team as a unit. Optional events emphasize weapon expertise and physical fitness. The competition is timed with the best time overall winning the entire event. Teams are penalized and additional time added on to an event for missed shots or other errors. The five events are: Hostage Rescue, Pritcher Scramble, Officer Rescue, Tower Scramble and Obstacle Course.

The officers that are selected to compete in these events train year round on a consistent basis. For LPD to finish in second place takes dedication and commitment from each member of the team. For SWAT team members, it’s an opportunity for them to come together as one to learn from each other from across the globe. Our agency is proud to say that LPD came in 2nd place

The 2nd Place Team Members are:

Sgt. Bob Bernhardt

Sgt. Brian McNabb

Sgt. Jasper Yzaguirre

Sgt. Dale Deas

Det. Mike Glass

Ofc. Mark Eby

Ofc. Preston Chatmon

Ofc. George Anthony

The training and education program is a vital component of the SWAT Round-Up International experience. Training for 2015 was conducted by nationally renowned instructors and included numerous relevant courses for SWAT.

The Lakeland Police Department is proud of these officers who represent our members not only in this competition, but day to day in their regular duties protecting our community. This award is representative of the commitment of these officers as individuals and the ability of our members to work together on teams.
