Pedestrian Killed In Traffic Crash

 

LAKELAND, FL (January 10, 2017) - On Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at approximately 2:45 p.m., Lakeland Police officers responded to the area of Harden Boulevard, near Forest Park Street, in reference to a traffic crash involving a pedestrian struck by a pickup truck.  

 

Glenn Gillenwater, age 63, of Lakeland, was struck and killed by a 1984 Ford pickup truck driven by 26-year-old Michael Duey.  According to reports, Duey was traveling southbound on Harden Boulevard when his truck began to swerve, drove up onto the raised shoulder and struck Gillenwater who was walking on the sidewalk. Duey’s truck continued down an embankment and struck two trees before coming to a final rest. 

 

Emergency medical professionals from the Lakeland Fire Department and Polk County Fire Rescue arrived on scene and began assisting officers in providing life saving measures. Both Gillenwater and Duey were transported to Lakeland Regional Health Center. Gillenwater passed away due to the injuries sustained in the crash. Duey was treated for minor injuries and released. 

 

Members of the LPD Traffic Homicide Unit closed the portion of Harden Boulevard between Beacon Road and Ariana Street for approximately three hours. 

 

No charges have been filed at this time. This is an open case and the Lakeland Police Department Traffic Homicide team is continuing to investigate.

Motorcyclist Killed in Accident

LAKELAND, FL (December 11, 2016) – On Sunday, December 11, 2016, at approximately 11:30 a.m., the Lakeland Police Department responded to the intersection of Drane Field Road and Air Park Drive, regarding an accident involving a motorcycle and a semi-truck. According to investigators, Jason Douglas Faircloth, age 36, was approaching the intersection on his motorcycle when a semi-truck, driven by Dennis Allen Coppins, age 43, began to turn south on to Air Park Drive.  Coppins did not see the approaching motorcycle and Faircloth was unable to stop. Both vehicles collided.

Polk County Fire Rescue and Lakeland Fire Department arrived on scene and began to perform life saving measures. Faircloth was transported to Lakeland Regional Health Center where he succumbed to his injuries. Mr. Coppins did not appear to sustain any injuries. The roadway was shut down for approximately four hours and forty-five minutes.

Mr. Faircloth’s next of kin has been notified. No charges have been filed at this time. The case remains open and is being investigated.

On February 2, at 8:07 a.m. the Lakeland Police Department investigated a traffic fatality on SR 546 (W Memorial Blvd) at the intersection of Swindell Rd. There was very dense and heavy fog at the time of the crash and both drivers had significantly diminished visibility at the time of the crash. 

Vehicle 1, a 1995 Green Mercury was making a left turn from Swindell Rd onto east bound W Memorial Blvd. Vehicle 2, a 2014 Yamaha motorcycle was west bound on W Memorial Blvd in the outside lane. Vehicle 1 pulled into the path of vehicle 2. Vehicle 2 struck the front left side of vehicle 1 in the area of the front left tire. Vehicle 1 rotated counter clockwise and came to final rest. Vehicle 2 deflected off of vehicle 1 and the rider of vehicle 2, Armando Faz, 24 yrs old, was separated from the motorcycle and continued west bound where he came to rest (approx 113 feet). Faz was pronounced deceased at the scene by PCEMS. The crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.

Driver of vehicle #1 – Cynthia D Patrick Kinsler, 43 yrs old, 1945 W. Highland Drive, Lakleand, Fla. Not injured in the accident.  

On November 20th at 7:15pm, the Lakeland Police Department responded to Sikes and Ariana Street in reference to a bicyclist hit by a car. The driver, Henry L. Goodman, 67, of Mulberry was northbound on Sikes Blvd when a bicyclist crossed the road into his patch. The bicyclist, identified as, Byron P. Haas, 39 yrs old, was hit and landed in the roadway on Sikes just north of Ariana Street. Haas was pronounced deceased at the scene by Polk EMS.

 

Goodman and witnesses stated the light was green and that Haas rode his bicycle into traffic when he did not have the right away, and also outside of the pedestrian pathway. No charges have been filed and Traffic Homicide Investigator will follow up.
