Police Investigate Shooting
On August 10th at 10:00am, the Lakeland Police Department responded to the Lakeland Regional Health Center in reference to a 13 month old child, being shot. The child was treated and it appears she did not suffer any permanent injury. The mother, Tylashia Sha’Crystal Davis, met with the officers at the hospital.
Davis advised that she was at work when her friend, who was house sitting for her called and stated that Davis' 13 month old child had been shot.
The friend told officers that she was sleeping and was awaken by a 17 year old male saying that the 13 month old was bleeding from her leg. She then stated that she immediately transported the 13 month old child to the hospital. The friend told officers that she did not hear anything such as the gunshot.
The 17 year old stated that he was outside of the apartment on the porch when he heard a loud pop. He stated he entered the apartment and saw the 13 month old sitting on the floor in front of a couch bleeding. He further stated that he saw a small caliber handgun in the hands of a 3 year old who is the brother of the 13 month old. The 17 year old did not remember who took the handgun from the 3 year old or where the handgun came from. The mother, Tylashia Sha’Crystal Davis, stated she did not have a handgun in the apartment.
Detectives responded to the scene and determined that 17 year old was outside with possibly 3 friends when the shooting occurred. The detectives were unable to recover the handgun as it had been moved and no one has any knowledge of what happened to the handgun. There are several inconsistencies in the statements that detectives obtained from witnesses at the scene. The Department of Children and Families took custody of the 13 month old victim and her 3 year old brother. No criminal charges have been filed at this time.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are suspicious and this is still an ongoing criminal investigation at this time. Due to the “active” criminal investigation, the names of the witnesses and victims are exempt under the Florida Pubic Records Law pursuant, s.119.071(2)(c)1
