CITY OF LAKELAND RUNOFF ELECTION SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8TH
LAKELAND, FL (November 4, 2009) – The City of Lakeland municipal election was held Tuesday, November 3rd. Voters re-elected Commissioner Howard Wiggs in the Lakeland At Large Seat 1 race and elected Don Selvage as a newly seated Commissioner in the Lakeland Southwest District C seat.

A runoff election is scheduled for Tuesday, December 8, 2009 to decide the Mayoral race and the Lakeland Northwest District A seat. The ballot will also include the special election for the Lakeland Southeast District D seat.

The City of Lakeland Mayoral ballot for the December 8th runoff election includes Gow Fields who received 39.45% of the vote and Jim Verplanck who received 41.74% of the vote. Lakeland City Charter specifies that candidates must receive 50% plus one in order to be declared a winner of a race.

The December 8th runoff ballot will include Clarence Grier Sr. who received 30.17% of the vote and Phillip Walker who received 45.64% of the vote in the Lakeland Northwest District A seat. The December 8th ballot will also include the special election for the Southeast District D seat that has candidate Patrick Jones campaigning against incumbent Edith Yates.

The District D seat was re-opened for qualifying due to candidate James Goetz withdrawing from the race against Yates. During the re-qualifying period two candidates filed paperwork to run against Yates but one of the candidates, Preston Studstill, announced today that he is withdrawing. This leaves Jones and Yates in the race for the City of Lakeland District D seat.
